Brasenia schreberi

Brasenia schreberi, a dicot, is a perennial herb native to California and found otherwhere in North America and beyond.It is discerned by the thick coating of gelatinous slime covering the young stems, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. The long reddish leaf stalks are attached to the centers of the floating oval leaves, making them umbrella-like. Brasenia schreberi is an aquatic plant with purple flowers.It grows in lakes and slow-moving streams,and is suitable for aquariums.The plant has phytotoxic properties that inhibit the growth of other plants nearby and thereby allow it to become dominant.
