About Xyloglucan
Xyloglucan is a natural hemicellulose polysaccharide found in the primary cell walls of many plants, especially tamarind seeds (Tamarindus indica). It is a highly functional biopolymer widely used in the food, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries due to its excellent hydration, film-forming, thickening, and skin-protective properties.
Xyloglucan is a hemicellulosic polysaccharide widely found in the cell walls of higher plants; composed primarily of a glucose backbone and xylose side chains, it plays a significant role in both plant growth and the food industry. Its backbone consists of glucose units linked by β-1,4-glycosidic bonds, with approximately 75% of the glucose residues bearing α-D-xylopyranosyl side chains at the C-6 position; some of these xylose residues may undergo further substitution with sugars such as galactose or fucose. Although xyloglucan is a form of dietary fiber that the human digestive system cannot break down, it serves as a nutrient source for gut bacteria. Furthermore, oligosaccharides derived from xyloglucan can be utilized as bio-fertilizers and plant stress-tolerance inducers, and—owing to their immunomodulatory activity—are also used in the development of sunscreen ingredients.
