About Tetragastrin (Cholecystokinin Tetrapeptide; CCK-4)
Tetragastrin is a synthetic tetrapeptide with the biological activity of natural gastrin. Its chemical structure is identical to the C-terminal tetrapeptide amide of gastrin.
As a cholecystokinin receptor (CCK-4) agonist, Tetragastrin exerts its effects by promoting gastric acid secretion and enhancing protein, RNA, and DNA synthesis in the gastrointestinal mucosa and pancreas. In vitro experiments show that it can activate adenylate cyclase in rat gastric mucosa, and in vivo experiments demonstrate that it can reduce the incidence of adenocarcinoma in rats treated with N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine and enhance the protective mechanism of gastric mucosal surface mucus secretion. Clinically, it is used as an alternative to histamine for testing gastric acid secretion function and for treating hypochlorhydria, gastroptosis, atrophic gastritis, and postoperative digestive system symptoms.
CCK-4 is used as a panicogenic agent to induce experimental anxiety or panic attacks, and is used in the screening of anxiolytic drugs.
