About Ponazuril
Ponazuril is an antiprotozoal medication primarily used in veterinary medicine. Its most common application is for treating Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM) in horses, a serious neurological disease caused by the parasite Sarcocystis neurona.
It is a member of the triazine family of drugs and is the principal active metabolite of another anticoccidial drug, toltrazuril.
Ponazuril works by interfering with the essential cellular functions of the parasite. Specifically, it is believed to target the apicoplast, a specialized organelle found in apicomplexan parasites (like S. neurona) that is involved in key metabolic pathways . This action disrupts the parasite's energy metabolism and membrane structures, ultimately leading to its death.
Studies indicate that Ponazuril eliminates coccidia in animals without compromising the development of their innate immunity. As this immunity strengthens, affected animals can gradually reduce their reliance on medication. Furthermore, Ponazuril is capable of crossing the placental barrier to directly eliminate *Neospora caninum*, a parasite that can traverse the placenta and inflict severe damage upon the fetus.
Currently, Ponazuril has not yet been approved for the prevention or treatment of coccidiosis in poultry, nor have there been any reported studies regarding the elimination of Ponazuril residues in broiler chickens. Given its potent anticoccidial activity and the fact that it undergoes no metabolic transformation within the body following absorption, Ponazuril holds promise as a potential anticoccidial agent for chickens, offering the prospect of a reduced tissue residue withdrawal period.
