About Methylthioninium Chloride
Methylthioninium chloride is an oxidizing agent primarily used to treat methemoglobinemia caused by chemicals or drugs, and as a temporary antidote for cyanide poisoning.
As a reducing agent, it converts methemoglobin (ferric iron) to normal hemoglobin (ferrous iron), making it suitable for methemoglobinemia caused by poisoning from substances such as nitrites and aniline; at high concentrations, it can temporarily bind to cyanide ions through oxidation, alleviating cyanide poisoning.
Pharmacological studies have shown that methylthioninium chloride has detoxification, analgesic, antibacterial, antiviral, and antitumor effects, and can correct hemodynamic disturbances in patients with septic shock.
