About Magainin 2
Magainin 2 (Magainin II) is an antimicrobial peptide (AMP) isolated from the skin of African clawed frogs. Magainin 2 exhibits antibiotic activity against a wide range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. It also exhibits activity against protozoa. Magainin 2 exerts its cytotoxic effects by preferentially interacting with anionic phospholipids abundant in bacterial membranes. Magainin 2 not only effectively destroys microbial cell walls but also reduces damage to human host cells.
Magainin 2 is a 23-amino acid peptide with antimicrobial properties. Studies have demonstrated that Magainin 2 exhibits potent bactericidal activity, primarily by inducing early apoptosis in Escherichia coli, leading to morphological changes and, consequently, bactericidal activity. Magainin 2 kills bacteria by permeating the cell membrane. Its primary mechanism of action is osmotic swelling and subsequent cell rupture, disrupting membrane functions responsible for osmotic homeostasis and leading to cell death. Magainin 2 does not exhibit significant toxicity to mammalian cells.
