About Acetylcysteine
Acetylcysteine, also known as N-acetylcysteine or N-acetyl-L-cysteine, is a pharmaceutical drug and nutritional supplement used primarily as a mucolytic agent and in the management of paracetamol (acetaminophen) overdose. Other uses include sulfate repletion in conditions, such as autism, where cysteine and related sulfur amino acids may be depleted. 
Acetylcysteine is a thiol-containing antioxidant that increases the cellular pool of free radical scavengers and is also a mucolytic agent. Its mechanism of action is to cleave disulfide bonds within mucin peptide bonds, converting mucin into small peptide chains, thereby loosening and reducing the viscosity of sputum. Acetylcysteine and glutathione share similar functionalities; both possess thiol-based antioxidant properties and protect against oxidative stress damage caused by septic shock. Acetylcysteine inhibits neuronal apoptosis but also induces apoptosis in smooth muscle cells. Acetylcysteine also inhibits HIV replication and serves as a substrate for microsomal glutathione transferase (GST).
