About All-trans Retinal
All-trans Retinal is a metabolite of vitamin A and a key intermediate in the visual cycle. It binds to opsin in photoreceptor cells to form rhodopsin, playing a central role in the conversion of light into electrical signals.
All-trans Retinal is the closest component to retinoic acid (A acid). It is generated by the oxidative cleavage of β-carotene. Reduction yields retinol, and oxidation yields retinoic acid. All-trans Retinal is the cofactor of rhodopsin. In visual cells, 11-cis-retinal combines with opsin to form visual pigment. Upon absorbing light, 11-cis-retinal isomerizes to all-trans-retinal, causing a conformational change in rhodopsin and initiating nerve impulses to the brain, thus forming vision.
